On June 23, 2016, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court’s 4-4 decision in United States v. Texas: “The deeply distressing decision in United States v. Texas is a setback to building a more compassionate and common-sense national immigration policy. Today, the Supreme Court struck a blow against two federal programs that provided hope for millions of undocumented immigrants living in the shadows".

“This crisis demands clarity and compassion. Americans deserve a Congress that will finally act to reform our broken immigration laws and provide a way to earn a pathway to citizenship for countless undocumented immigrants who want nothing more than to make a better life for themselves and their kids".

“The 4-4 vote in this case also highlights the importance to the American people of a fully-functioning Supreme Court. Because Senate leadership has refused to do its job and grant even a hearing to Chief Judge Merrick Garland, undocumented immigrants and their families must continue living in limbo and fear being broken apart.”

New Jersey's immigrant population has been an integral part of the state's economy for decades. New Jersey has 15,200 foreign born students who contribute $447.6 million to the state economy.

According to a report by the Perryman Group, without the contributions of unauthorized immigrants, New Jersey would lose $24.2 billion in economic activity, $10.7 billion in gross state product, and approximately 103,898 jobs.
